Taken from a post on Wings of Valor by JG13 Dark Sheild
He uses alot more views than I do so I thought I would add this.
I place this post under the stratety heading, mainly for newbies,
because I feel good views are the first thing that must be established. With
proper views you can identify targets and location, maintain situational
awareness, help you keep your perspective of your plane and locate and help
friendly units.
I like the Wingman because it has the most buttons on the stick for use by the
thumb.
Now, for my button config and why. Buttons are number d1-d7 with d1 being the
trigger. In the profiler that comes with the stick you can assign more than one
key board button to a single button for use with your thumb.
Example: In setting the d2 button when the profiler ask me to record keystrokes
I hit f1 key then u key twice(one for each gun) for unjam. When flying in afm,
if my guns jam, all I have to do is hit any button on my stick to unjam.
d2 I have set to f1 view and unjam. I use this view to fire. I also use it while
climbing and scouting.
d3 is set to f2. I use this when I'm chasing a plane and he's barely our of my
f1 view. F2 has an odd habit of starting your head from the complete oposite
side of the plane. This can be disorienting in dogfight when you are right on
his six and he moves out of f1 view to your left so you hit the f2 key and your
head starts from right behind. In order to counter this on my stick when I
record my keystrokes I hit f1(to bring view front) f2 then u u to unjam.
d4 key is set to hit e, f8, u u. With the push of this button I can cycle
through enemy names quickly and get a quick perspective on how close they are to
me. If close, my plane(in background) is large. And I get my guns unjammed.
For
free!
The d5 key is set to f3, u u. I use this key alot. I keep my perspective while
chasing. When I get close enough to the enemy plane I hit the d2(f1) key and
fire. Use the d4 and d5 keys in combination as you are coming into a fray. Hit
d4(e+f8) to see enemy name, then hit d5(f3) to get a good perspective on where
he is compared to you. Then hit d4 again, d5.etc to get an idea of where all the
enemy planes are in relation to you. Excellent views for maintaining situational
awareness.
The d6 button (on the base) is set to shift. It changes the properties of d2-d5.
d6+d2 is set to d, u u. So I can find my wingman without cycling through
friendlies.
d6+d3 scrolls my chat up one line at a time. (ctrl+up arrow)
d6+d4 scrolls through friendlies just as d4 alone scrolls through enemies.
d6+d5 gives me the f8 view of my target without changing the target. d4 hits e
first, d6+d4 hits f first. Both cycle to next e or next f. I find f8 view
usefull when your enemy is above you.
When you are cycling through the n key, do it in f3. Hit d5 then n. This gives
you the f3 view as you cycle through nearest planes. If a plane is below you to
the left and you hit n from f1 view, your head just turns left. You may think
he's to far away for a visual when his actually coming up under you.
I also have programmed buttons on the hatswitch.
The up, up-right and up-left buttons are all set as follows:
o, f1, u u. If a plane flies in front of me that I want as my target I hit this
button. If you hit o on the keyboard it will select whatever is in front of you
as your target but it turns your head. By recording f1 after o (for object) in
the profiler, it keeps my head in firing view. The reason I have all three
forward hat buttons set to this is because the hat on a wingman is touchy and
otherwise it you may have to hit "up" several times before you target the enemy
plane(or building or aa or any object.)
Finally, the d7(again, on base of stick) key is set as follows:
shift+n, alt+i This turns on names and gives a little box in upper right hand
that I don't really use but it looks neat. Hit d7 button when you take off for
the first time.
If you can master this setup you never have to ask yourself, 'Where did he go?',
You always know. F3 takes some getting used to especially when you are close to
the ground.
I'm not the best pilot and don't claim to be. (Unless I'm drinking.) These views
not only help me dogfight, they also give me a front row seat to watching me
getting my butt kicked. lol. But I never lose because I didn't know where I was
or where my enemy was. Any pilot that uses multiple views can tell you the
stories of flying into the ground due to being in the wrong view. (Ditch plane
while watching in f8 for example.)
If you have a wingman then try these settings. Please let me know what you
think.
~~~~~~~Salute~~~~~~~
Another quality book by dw publishing. lol
You might see if you can get that e key programmed into stick
combined with f8. You will instantly go through multiple enemies. Click, click,
click. One botton on stick.
I found that I used the forward hat switches very rarely so I put o there.
Program that f1 in behind the o and your head won't move if you are firing.
Sucks to lose gun site and aim when you are leading your enemy(which is not
currently your target) and hit o to target him. Your head turns and your bullets
go zipping past your target while you look for the f1 key. Even if you have your
finger on it, your losing bullets and distracted.
If your stick has three keys and hat for thumb then you can have f1, f1+f2(To
avoid head turning), f3. With a shift key on base you can double that to
e+f8(for enemy cycle) f+f8(friend cycle) and plain old f8(so it don't change
enemy).
Have to say though, that my brother plays the same way you do, with fingers
hovering over, and he's amazing. That and five years of practice. lol.
